In a field laden with tutorials about how to make the latest 2.0 web layout we are going to back track and determine what does the user want. We will answer two questions:
What do the users want from the site?
What do our stakeholders want from the site?
Businesses have come to recognize that providing a quality user experience is very important and helps them with their sustainability. According to Jesse Garrett, “it is user experience that forms the custpomer’s impression of the company’s offerings, it is user experience that differentiates the company from its competitors, and it is user experience that determines whether your custponer will ever come back.”
There are many forms of design but one that is often left alone is user-centered design. So as I go through this series we will be talking about the user experience in every step of the way in developing a website. No matter how bad their life is treating them they need to come to your site and feel a breath of fresh air.
So our setting for this series (in depth) will be that we are on a project team for some design company and a job (to be determined) has come in and what do we do. Do we open photoshop and start, or even maybe start sketching some designs or do we stop and start our user centered design for this company. A lot of this material will be coming from my experiences from the art institute so I would love to hear from you guys out there in the industry.
Some of the stuff we will be covering:
- The 5 Phases (or planes by some)
- Site objectives
- Success Metrics
- Personas
- User Needs
- Team Roles and Process
- Strategy Documents
- Functionality and Content
- Interaction Design
- Navigation Design
- Wire frames
- Design Documents
- And more…
